BSA x WAA Visit to Chandler Park Academy Middle School

In April of the 2023-2024 academic year, 12 of our members embarked on a full-day of outreach at Chandler Park Academy Middle School in metro Detroit. BSA members presented a 30 minute mini-lesson on planetary orbits, the force of gravity, the properties of light, and the 8 moon phases to several 7th and 8th grade classes, totaling over 180 students. The lesson concluded with a hands-on activity enabling students to build their own solar eclipse viewers ahead of the total solar eclipse that occurred in the days following. BSA members also fielded questions about the college applications process and the possibilities within the world of engineering.

BSA visit to Jack and Jill High School

BSA members visited Wayne State to volunteer at an aerospace themed Jack and Jill event for k-8th graders. BSA taught and managed three different rooms of around 50 kids. They volunteered in different room assisting the 8th graders with robotics ativities that had to deal with motion planning and aerospace. At the end of the day, the 8th graders presented their projects to the rest of the students and their parent.

BSA Visit to Huron High School

In the spring of 2022 BSA went out to Huron High School in Ann Arbor, MI to host an outreach event. We helped the students an opportunity to learn about BSA and the college experience. We had an Q&A session with a student panel of UMich students from different backgrounds and places on campus. After the Q&A session, we gave the students a brief aerospace lesson on a key principle of rocket launches (Newtons Third Law). After the lesson, they were separated into group where they would build a bottle rocket which we were able to launch once everyone was done!
